Later this month the UK will see the next largest offshore wind farm being officially operational. This wind farm, just 89km out from the Yorkshire coast will be 462km² and will consist of 165 Siemens Gamesa 8MW wind turbines which will be able to power 1.3 million UK homes. This new wind farm will be named the Hornsea two which is a sequel of sorts to the Hornsea one, the previous largest windfarm which was 407km². The project’s owner and developer Orsted reported earlier this month that they are hopeful that the wind farm will be commissioned and operational later this month. Though this has come after many delays which has caused ‘negative effects on the company. For example, Orsted blamed overhedging and ineffective hedges across all of its offshore wind portfolio. This was on top of the Omicron virus ramping up which further pushed back commissioning for the Hornsea two.
Just last week Orsted announced that all of their suppliers will use 100% generated electricity by 2025 and also their operating profits came to DKK 13 billion which is in line with their profits of last year. So even after the delays and other problems, it seems that Orsted is still seeing a profit and after the Hornsea 2 opens up at the end of August this profit is sure to increase even further and will hopefully help the people of the UK with the current energy crisis.
