About the Role: Are you ready to make a significant impact in the Optics and Photonics industry? We are seeking a Senior Development Engineer to join our innovative Optics and Fibre Optics R&D team in Torquay. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the development of cutting-edge fibre-optic amplifier sub-systems for applications in free space optical communications, aerospace, and remote sensing.
As part of a global R&D effort, you will play a key role in a brand new project at a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership in designing and developing high-power fibre-optic amplifier sub-systems and components.
  • Ensure projects meet deadlines, milestones, and budget constraints.
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team of optical, mechanical, and electronic design engineers.
  • Manage and actively participate in prototype builds and assembly, including fibre-optic splicing and opto-electronic testing.
  • Develop and execute test plans for functional and environmental verification of photonic components and systems, ensuring compliance with specifications.
  • Engage with customers to negotiate specifications and present results clearly to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Build strong relationships with technical and business experts across the organization.
  • Conduct technical reviews and produce management reports based on technical activities.


Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • 3+ years of relevant experience in the optics/photonics industry, particularly with optical amplifiers.
  • Commercial experience in product development for fibre optics or laser products.
  • Hands-on experience building and testing fibre-optic components or opto-electronic modules.
  • Proven ability to generate proposals and manage the financial and technical aspects of development projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage customers technically and collaboratively.
  • Comfortable creating and delivering technical presentations.
  • Degree or PhD in Engineering or Physics, with a focus on Optics, Photonics, or Fibre Optics.
