About the Role: We are looking for a highly skilled Principal Photonics Engineer to join our dynamic R&D team based in Torquay. This is an exciting opportunity for a technical expert with a strong understanding of optical fibres and their properties, including experience with fusion and tapering methods. In this role, you will lead the development of innovative fibre-optic products for various market segments, including industrial, aerospace & defense, and bio-photonics.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop advanced fibre-optic and photonic components and devices using state-of-the-art design tools and experimental testing.
  • Enhance and develop fused fibre-optic coupler products.
  • Contribute to the product development strategy to meet business growth objectives.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including mechanical and electronic design engineers, product engineers, and technicians.
  • Engage in prototype builds, including operating fusion rigs, fibre-optic splicing, mechanical/electrical assembly, and opto-electronic testing.
  • Develop and execute test plans for functional and environmental qualification of components for high-reliability applications.
  • Support design modifications and engineering changes to existing products.
  • Present findings clearly to both internal teams and external customers.
  • Deliver projects on time and within budget.


Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Degree in Engineering or Physics; a PhD in a relevant area is preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of optical fibres, including single-mode, polarization-maintaining, multi-mode, photonic crystal, and multi-core fibres.
  • Experience with glass processing techniques, particularly fibre optic tapering and fusion processes.
  • Knowledge of fibre-optics, photonics, and associated material properties.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex technical challenges.
  • Familiarity with optical testing equipment and processes relevant to optical fibres.
  • Understanding of reliability issues associated with optical fibre and components, including proof testing and harsh condition aging.
  • Ability to devise engineering processes focused on high yield, reliability, and performance.
  • Well-organized with the ability to meet tight deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and autonomous with a proactive approach.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
